Introduction to Mountain Navigation Course - Mynydd Illtyd Common, 9 30 am to 4 30 pm approx. The course will be starting and finishing at the National Park Visitor Centre, Libanus which has car parking (£3 for over 4 hours), public conveniences and a restaurant. You will need suitable footwear (we recommend walking boots/shoes), waterproof and warm clothing along with food/drinks that you may require on the activity. We can provide printed maps of the area if you do not have an Ordnance Survey OL12 1/25,000 map to use. You will need a compass to fully benefit from the course and we can loan a compass if required (but we will need to know at the time of booking). Some of the paths and tracks may be muddy and slippery when wet so suitable footwear and clothing should be worn. You will need to be prepared for the prevailing weather conditions. This outdoor based course is an easy paced moderate walk for those looking to learn how to navigate in the outdoor environment. A in-house Arfon 6 Outdoors Ltd 'Introduction to Navigation Attendance E Certificate' will be emailed post course to attendees. . Navigation skills are key to enjoying our challenging outdoor environment in a safe, responsible and enjoyable manner. This course will introduce you to the basic navigation skills that are needed to enable you to head in to the outdoors with an increased confidence. On this one day course we will cover: - understanding map symbols, orientating the map, natural navigation skills and methods, taking a 4 and 6 figure grid reference, basic compass skills, simple navigation strategies, estimating time and distance, basic contour interpretation, relocation - when you don't know where you are, planning a suitable walk, basic weather knowledge, equipment choice, dealing with emergencies and access/conservation issues. The course will be led by Aled Roberts a fully qualified leader who is a full member of the Mountain Training Association (MTA), National Navigation Award Scheme Tutor (NNAS), Advanced First Aid Instructor, Swift Rescue Water Technician and British Canoe Coach.
